Menopause in the workplace

Coping with menopause in the workplace...

Menopause can affect every area of a woman’s life – and work is no exception. Hot flushes during meetings, brain fog during presentations, mood swings, sleep disruption, anxiety – all while trying to maintain professionalism in environments that often don't understand or accommodate what's really going on.

You're not alone. And in the UK, your employer has a legal duty to support you.

Your Rights at Work

Under the Equality Act 2010, menopause symptoms may be classed as a disability if they have a long-term and substantial impact on your ability to carry out daily tasks. That means employers must make reasonable adjustments – just as they would for any other health condition.

Additionally, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires employers to ensure the working environment does not worsen someone’s symptoms. This includes considering ventilation, uniform policies, toilet access, and workload pressures.

What Reasonable Adjustments Might Look Like

  • Flexible working hours to help manage fatigue or poor sleep

  • More frequent breaks to regulate temperature and reduce stress

  • Access to fans or temperature control in the workspace

  • Quiet spaces to take a moment if overwhelmed

  • Uniform changes to allow breathable, comfortable clothing

  • Supportive conversations without stigma or embarrassment

Menopause should never be a barrier to your job, your confidence, or your career progression.

How to Start the Conversation

It might feel daunting, but if your symptoms are affecting your work, it’s worth talking to your manager or HR department. You don’t have to disclose everything – but framing it in terms of how they can help you work more effectively can open the door to support.

If possible, bring documentation from your GP or a menopause specialist. Keeping a record of symptoms can also help make your case clearer.

You Deserve Support – At Home and at Work

Menopause is a natural phase of life, not a weakness. Employers are becoming more aware – but change often starts with brave conversations.

If you're struggling to balance menopause and work, our 6-Week Menopause Reset  (online or in-person in Devon) offers practical tools, symptom support, and coaching to help you regain confidence and clarity.

And if your workplace needs support, I also offer corporate online workshops and workplace menopause plans to help teams create a more informed and supportive environment.
